Happy That-Time-of-Year, everyone! *waves, throws links and biscuits*
And the Yuletidery has been exceptionally generous to me this time round. A gift for each of my three prompts - eeeee, it's like a conspiracy of awesome! - I'm reeling. Must share!

On the first day of Yuletide, the Archive gave to me.... a Really Rare Fandom!
El Desdichado by Anonymous No. 1: this was the rarest of my requests - for Julian May's Galactic Milieu series and Saga of the Exiles (Pliocene) series [a two-series ouroboros with psychic powers, aliens, time-travel, family dramas, evil beings, spaceships, French-Canadians and Scots!] - and existing fics for this fandom can be counted on one hand, so imagine my glee at getting a shiny new one! And it's all in Atoning Unifex flashbacks; oh, the Unifex-nostalgia-angstiness! Plus, it's got Marc Remillard/Aiken Drum slash - and if that pairing's ever been written before, I'll eat my best hat (which is broad-brimmed leopard-print velour, so you know I'm serious). Anyone out there know/enjoy these books? Go read this fic - it's just delightful!

On the second day of Yuletide, the Archive gave to me.... a Jane Austen Crossover Feast!
The Dancing Monkeys by Anonymous No. 2: found this while Yuletide-browsing, saw my name on it as recipient, and outraged the cats with my shrieking. Ooo, LOOK! Unique fic alert! Mansfield Park/Persuasion crossover! 11,000+ words - all Henry Crawford's PoV - he's gone abroad after breaking up with Maria ex-Rushworth, and he ends up as a visitor on board the Laconia... Ooo, sailors! William Price and Sam Price! Wentworth, Benwick, Dick Musgrove! Age of Sail fans, read it and squee: shipboard life, lots of period details and naval-speak, and a cannon-firing clash with a French ship. Plus lots of Henry-reflections on MP events, the Henry/Maria and Henry/Fanny relationships; and woven between the lines, the Persuasion moments that Henry misses but the reader gets. (Bonus for lucky-recipient-me: allusions to the Mary/Maria MP fic I wrote last year, though you don't need any familiarity with that fic to enjoy the crossover.) Austen-fic readers, don't miss this story - it's very fine indeed.

On the third day of Yuletide, the Archive gave to me.... a Meg March Moment!
Flight From Vanity Fair by Anonymous No. 3: with Yuletide Madness now unlocked, the ficlets are pouring forth today... and I've scored one for Little Women! Meg's thoughts before her wedding - and a touch of Meg-Jo dialogue - all kinds of choices and changes and possibilities hovering here. Satisfies my whim to know if Meg ever looked back on the "Vanity Fair" chapter events, and when and how. Take a look, if you fancy a behind-the-scenes-of-canon bit of Alcottness.

Cat's Birthday HP Drabblethon 5 was made of win. THANK YOU so much to all involved, writers (and artist) and readers! :D :D :D

Thanks to bethbethbeth and everyone else who pimped this thing in their journals and encouraged new people to come and drabble for the kitties. Thanks to the prolific reviewers - especially bonfoi, who commented on everything (and, in a nice bit of karma, received three responses to that "Snupin adopting a cat" prompt). Thanks to moreteadk for squeeing madly and staying up late two nights in a row and posting drabble-recs.

All prompts now done. Some more than once, thanks to enthusiastic pinch-hitters.
I've updated the links on the big list, so you can just click on the done! next to each prompt. There were 123 participants, and we only lost seven along the way (a few turned up late). The final count is 132 creative items: 100-word drabbles, ficlets of various sizes (up to 1,664 words when femmequixotic couldn't stop Dracoing), and one drawing.

Welcome to the fifth Cat's Birthday HP Drabblethon!

It's an exchange. It's HP-only. It's eclectic. It all happens in one weekend - starting NOW.
And it usually happens in April, but better in July than not at all, right? FYI, the cats (who can't read calendars) are 10 years old (Bestia the Sorting Cat) and five years old (Imperio).

How this works: Think of a prompt for somebody else, and the Sorting Cat will give you somebody else's prompt in exchange.

Two easily-confused words together? Never a good thing. (Try googling "Deadly Hollows" - Q.E.D.)

Here's a phrase that's truly hexed.

- hare's breath ["Call for you, Ms. Writer... heavy-breathing bunny on line one..."]
- hair's breath [But where does it keep its itty-bitty lungs?]
- hare's breadth [The distance between Alice and the Mad Hatter.]
- hair's breadth

The last one is correct. The others are just variations that keep popping up in fics and giving me Odd Image Moments.

Yes, the Cat's Birthday HP Drabblethon is back! :D Rather late this year, July rather than April, but hey - at least it's happening, and cats can't read calendars anyway.

July 25-26 weekend. On my LJ.

Fastest fest in the fandom - rather the opposite of a Big Bang - all happens in one weekend - and it's open to all genres, characters, pairings, whatever. Basic requirement: being game to try writing at least 100 words in 24 hours, no matter what prompt the Sorting Cat may give you. (That "no matter what prompt" should be in big neon lights.)

Further to Misspelled Horcruxes (September 2005) and More Misspelled Horcruxes (May 2006) - I'm tickled to report that the fandom is still coming up with new and creative ways of misspelling those soul-splitty things.

Spotted three in the past week.

* But, if they found out that Harry was after Voldemort's Hurcroxes, she wouldn't be the only one in danger...

* its the holidays after harry 6 th year what will ahppen harry ginny together? horruxes? read to find out

* Yes I defeated him and in the process I died since I was one of his Horcoux's but surprisingly I came back to life.

On the topic of anyway fluttering around with an extra s... I keep seeing it, and it's twitch-inducing.

It's not a word, you know? Not in standard English, either side of the Atlantic. It's one of those things like gonna or ain't or innit - okay in dialogue for appropriate characters, but not in the non-dialogue parts of your story.

My impression is that it's more of an American thing, and I don't think the Trio would say it. (Can somebody grab a British teenager and check this?) The teachers at Hogwarts really wouldn't say it; and Dumbledore or Lucius saying anyways is brain-hurting territory.

Yes, this is another of those futile flailing "OMG, stop it now!" rantlets that preach to the converted. Probably. And if you've moved on to some fandom based on American TV, I guess you don't need the advice - go wild with the anyways in your dialogue, and good luck to you. But in HP - OMG. Stop. It. Now.

You know what kinda tickles me in reviews? Context. A hint or two at the reader's surroundings or circumstances. Sort of interesting, and disorienting, to wander back into the HP fandom on LJ and see a bunch of unfamiliar names producing fic (ooo, new writers to explore!) while others have moved on to SGA, ST, Merlin, whatever - but a whole bunch of Potter-flisters are still here, so - hey. *waves*

And nothing kicks the nostalgia up a few notches like a bit of new HP fic from pogrebin. Check it out.

Gellert spends his nights reading the Bible like it is a bestseller. Separated from a British literary and critical tradition-- whose root practices, however now altered, grew from and alongside Biblical exegesis-- he reads the Bible like Milton would have read the Mahabharata if only he had gotten his hands on it. He sends Albus letters in Sanskrit and Latin, curses in Aramaic and finally stops talking at all.
