The Snape's Birthday HP Fandom Time-Capsule 2008
The Snape's Birthday Time-Capsule 2007 is now open - go look! Posted a year ago today - back when we weren't even sure if DH would be published in 2007.

And today's post is collecting entertainment for January 9, 2009.

Comment here: share your predictions for the HBP movie, your forecast/wishlist for the fandom in general, your birthday greeting to Snape, some interesting links or recs, a cookie from your fic of the moment, random babble about whatever's on your mind right now, your New Year Resolutions, your word of the day, a pet peeve, a nice big fangirly squee, or the details of what you had for breakfast. (One or more of the above, or anything else you feel like saying.)

This post will be visible until January 9, 2008 is entirely over, even in Hawaii. Then it will be hidden for a year, and everyone is encouraged to forget all about it until Snape's next birthday.

I predict that no chest monsters will be harmed in the making of HBP. I expect fandom will be composed of three main groups: screaming teenagers on Myspace, PWP fans, and a smaller set of long-term fans who will write essays and longer fanfic, or maybe draw/craft/vid/something we haven't thought up yet. I'm sure we'll be wanking about the same three or four things we always wank about, though in our day, we had to walk uphill both ways in the snow to get our wank, and our wank was better.

Finally, I predict that the Pit of Voles will remain, as ever, a great source of amusement.

*goes off to write epic Draco/Astoria romance*

My forecast is: there will be radically less Snape in HBP than one'd expect to...

There. I said it.

Yeah, well, with that ignominious nincompooop Kloves doing the screenplay, I'm not sure we'll see that at all, and I'm *reasonably* certain we won't see Spinner's End.

God. I hate him. So. Fucking. Much.

I don't think we'll see Spinner's End, either. We probably won't see much of Snape at all - until he kills Dumbledore, that is. I'm reasonably certain that we'll get to see that, because it's a plot point that carries over to the next book and has to imprint itself on the memory of the audience.

Oh, yes. Kind of like, oh, Snape being a Death Eater? Or Snape's Worst Memory? Or, um . . .

You get the point.

My impression is that movie!Snape has never seemed particularly evil (a friend of mine who hasn't read the books and only saw the films never realised how ambiguous a character Snape is supposed to be), so his killing Dumbledore might come out of nowhere.

I dunno what you mean by cookie -- here's an excerpt from a WIP that is currently defying me by refusing to fit into a reasonable canonlike place any which way I try to squeeze it.

---

The widening of his eyes was almost imperceptible, but clearly I had surprised him. I didn't hang about to find out whether I dared hope it was a surprise that came with the same oddly pleasant flutter I got when I looked at him, or whether the only reason I hadn't been hexed out of sheer how-dare-she was that he hardly knew where to start. Instead, I beat a hasty retreat in the other direction, seeking either a secluded corner of the library where I could berate myself in peace, or perhaps a convenient passing gallows.

---

I predict HBP is not going to make any damn sense to anyone who hasn't read all the books.

If we don't get to see Alan Rickman deliver that oh-so-drama-queeny "I, the Half-Blood Prince!" line, I predict I will cry.

Re: cookie:

I made that happen. Here's the final passage from Eyes Are Blind (which is something I'm not terribly proud of now):

The widening of his eyes was almost imperceptible, but Lily was familiar enough with his subtle expressions to notice it. Clearly, she had surprised him. She didn't hang about to find out whether it was a pleasant kind of surprise, or whether the only reason she hadn't been hexed out of sheer how-dare-she was that he hardly knew where to start. Instead, Lily beat a hasty retreat in the other direction, seeking either a secluded corner of the library where she could berate herself in peace, or perhaps a convenient passing gallows.

Well thanks to the WB I still haven't seen it, so here we go:

I'd never thought of it as queeny, but now I do that whole scene in the book is just totally performed in drag in my head.

And that's quite probably not going to happen in HBP, either!

Not queeny in the drag sense, just in the "drama queen" sense. Severus does like his theatrics. :)

Snape: I am the Half-Blood Prince, and I can lip-synch ABBA better than any of you Queens, mm-kay?
McGonagall: Oh Christ.
Harry: What?
McGonagall: You called him a coward, didn't you?
Harry: Um ... maybe?
*Snape flicks hair*
Harry: Is that bad?
*Snape applies lipstick, in the style of Silence of the Lambs*
McGonagall: He was always pulling this shit at school. Seriously, just back away. It could get ugly.
*Snape performs jump-suited rendition of Dancing Queen. Draco Malfoy face-palms. Pettigrew dances along then looks guilty. Dumbledore spins in his marble tomb.*

Spins in his tomb? Only if it's because he's dancing. I think this sort of business would be right up his alley.

I'll do all of the above! (plus 1)
1. I think HBP movie is going to be disapointing, but still good. I just have to remember to not think about the book when I see it.
2. I wish I saw more obscure pairings in fandom. Like Neville/Kingsley, or Snape/Blaise.
3. Happy Birthday Snape!
4. The most disturbing fanfic in the whole world (it's a carebears fanfic). Be afraid.
5. One of my current fics, titled "Daze":
Ron awoke in a daze and began surveying his surroundings. He was in a small room, with only one window. The sky outside was a bit darker than it had been last time he was cognizant. He must have only been unconscious for a little while. He tried to move his arms, but realized they were tied to a table of some sort. He pulled at his restraints, with no luck.
6. I really like country music. I wish more people did.
7. One of my new years resolutions is to stop fighting about stupid stuff with my hubby.
8. Word of the day: discombobulated
9. I hate people that don't use their turn-signals.
10. *squee* Snape!
11. I had a begal with cheese and some Oreos. So healthy, I know.
12. From my "George W. Bush Countdown Calendar":
January 9: 377 days left
The eight months of Bush presidency prior to 9/11 were characterized by attempts to prove the new president's gravity and intelligence. On August 9, 2001, Bush announced what had been touted as a wise compromise on stem cell research funded by the federal government. He said that the United States would make "more than 60 genetically diverse" cell lines already created available for study, while excluding any new lines from support. But for various scientific reasons, none of the 60 was viable for research. The president of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine later noted, "The president seems to have information far different from that of the bulk of the medical community."

Well, given the painful accuracy of my last prediction I'll refrain from doing my Nostradamus impression this time around. Happy birthday Snape! You'll still live on in our hearts. :-)

I see, I at least correctly predicted Snape's survival! \o/

What?

The Half-Blood Prince movie will probably only be second best to OotP... People will continue to complain about the movie makers having their priorities wrong as the marketing will be largely about the teenage romance (and not even Harry/Draco either) right up to the point were the movie comes out, because they'll try not to spoil the plot too much. The film itself will be pretty accurate to the book, I hope, which means people will still complain about the teenage romance.
We will see Snape and Draco posters again, though.

So finally a Happy 49th Birthday when this is opened next year, HBP!

So far what I've read about the movie scares me as they keep saying it's going to be funny. See, when I read HBP I am quite sure I was not amused. That whole Cave/Murder/Flight/Funeral=Not Funny. And I think what was funny-say Ron making out with Lavender wasn't that funny.

And in fact, the first time I saw a list of characters for HBP it didn't even mention Snape! I do hope they are just trying to 'surprise' the six or eight people that don't know what happened. It's my favorite book so I have high expectations.

Finally, for Snape's birthday I wrote a little drabble-Remembrance

9 January 2020
Dennis Creevey reporting for the Daily Prophet

On what would have been the sixtieth birthday of celebrated war hero, Severus Snape, this reporter made the trip to a cemetery in a small town in North Yorkshire.

Among the items left in remembrance: a 1960 vintage Chateau Mouton Rothschild from Lucius Malfoy; a healthy specimen of the species Asphodelus albus, commonly known as White Asphodel, with a note from Hogwarts Herbology Professor, Neville Longbottom; and a Wizarding photograph from Harry James Potter of Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy on the day they won the Quidditch Cup for Slytherin.

For the HBP movie, I expect inadvertent yet blatant Harry/Prince subtext.

And Alan Rickman NEEDS to let loose and scream in capslock during the escape scene (especially after his disappointingly quiet scene in PoA's Shrieking Shack).

Well, movie!HBP will probably be not as good as it should be, but also not as bad as it might be.

It probably also won't turn out to be set in an alternate universe where only James died and Lily and Severus raised Harry to be a sneaky, underhanded, competent Slytherin who knows that the plural of Horcrux is Horcruces. ;-)

The HBP movie will be far too confusing for the non-reader. There will be almost no reference to the potions book or explanation about Snape's past and why he's the Half-Blood Prince. In fact Snape will appear for no more than a total of 7 minutes screentime.
There will be very few scenes of Hogwarts students in school uniforms.
Ron & Lavender will not be as full-on as the book describes, however Hermione will throw a snit over their holding hands. She then runs off to Harry, causing the Harmonians to squee rather loudly about how they're right.
Ginny will not appear with Dean Thomas, but Harry will kiss her in the common room.
Draco Malfoy will only appear in passing, and his tower scene rewritten so that we only ever see Snape kill Dumbledore.

Predictions for movie: there will be wank about the lack of inclusion of important things. What, that doesn't count? Um. There will be a wardrobe malfunction somewhere in the press tour, and there will be an unexpected casting change between HBP and DH. We won't see Spinner's End or Scrimgeour and Percy coming to the Burrow, and Emma's eyebrows during the scene in which she sends birds at Ron will rival their wings beating. >.>

Fandom forecast: Fandom will move more to IJ or (if it's ready) a more fandom-specific service, though will stay on LJ if they'll have us for nonfannish gathering purposes. OTW will continue to grow and do good things. People I don't want to move on will keep doing so, but mostly they'll continue to be interesting to me anyway.

Dinner: ham, cheese and potato thing with broccoli.

:D

Oh, and I shall predict that Jo will continue giving too many details over which people will fight and/or pick nits, and, hm, that the RDR books thing (the printed Lexicon) will lead to a lot of debates as to what US copyright law means when it differentiates between factual and creative works.

The movie will destroy any complexity that Draco's storyline had, implying that his inability to kill is merely cowardice. Much like JKR did in DH.

JKR will continue to be an ass. Fans will continue to know the books better than she does.
